Toolpath parameters dialog resizing gripes

$

Hello all,

So I just wanted to throw this out here, to see if it bothers anyone else, or if it is just me....

We probably all have widescreen monitors nowadays or at lease high resolution which would support what I want (WISH!!) Mastercam would do. I was really, really hoping they would add it in 2017, but they didn't

Anyways, enough crying.... Does this bother anyone else??

When the toolpath parameters dialog box is open, it's resizeable.... yay.... nope!

Why, why, why Mastercam... when I go to resize it, you just stretch the tree of parameters to have tons of whitespace??

I want to have the vertical bar, separating the tree, to stay where it is. The tools description box should expand! I feel like that is logical, instead of having a horizontal scroll bar.  :(

Is every operation in Mastercam a hook?

Is every operation in Mastercam created using the C-hook (or NET-hook) interface or are they built statically into the executable? I'm just trying to get a grasp of how customizable Mastercam is. I have Visual Studio 2013 and am slowly trying to allocate some time to learning this side of Mastercam.

I don't suppose you can customize everything, but how about these:

- Change the appearance of the operation tree

- Add items to the right click menu of the operation tree

- Create a new toolpath called "create line using midpoint" (I REALLY NEED THIS!!!)

- Add some text and images for extra information about the job and store it directly into the mcam file

- Where can I find 3rd party hooks?

Thanks.

Resellers, and hard copies

Are your Mastercam resellers sending you hard copies of the latest versions?  I just downloaded 2017, and update 1 on my home computer, still having problems at work with firewall issues, and the linking.

So I was just wondering why I've not received a hard copy yet.....or do they still do this.  And yes maintenance is paid up.

Did you know Mastercam has "hidden" 5-axis toolpaths?

Hello Everyone,

If you own a seat of Multi-Axis in Mastercam, you have a ton of great toolpaths that are available from ModuleWorks. There are actually a bunch of really great 3 Axis Toolpaths produced by ModuleWorks that are included in Mastercam, but they are almost "hidden" from the normal user.

These toolpaths aren't actually hidden from the user. But the Mastercam interface makes them appear to be something they aren't, so the average user, even the average Multi-Axis user, doesn't know they exist.

If you have a seat of Multi-Axis, do the following:

With a Machine Group loaded, go to Toolpaths > Multi-Axis.

If prompted, enter a new program name.

In the Multi-Axis dialog box, select "Surface/Solid", then select "Triangular mesh".

The Triangular Mesh toolpaths are the best kept secret in Mastercam. They have been available since at least X5, so they have been in the last few versions of the software.

The term "Triangular Mesh" is perhaps what makes these toolpaths "hidden" from the average user. Typically you would think of a Triangular Mesh object as an STL file, or some other external reference. In terms of the ModuleWorks toolpaths however, Triangular Mesh takes on a new meaning. For most of the 5 Axis toolpaths, the normal direction of the surfaces being cut plays a crucial role in determining the tool axis orientation. With the "Triangular Mesh" toolpaths, the surfaces themselves are not used to orient the tool axis. For these toolpaths the surfaces are simply tessellated using a cut tolerance.

In a nutshell, this just means that the "Triangular Mesh" toolpaths are just "3D Rouging and Finishing" toolpaths that don't take their tool axis direction from the surfaces being cut. They just provide great 3 Axis toolpaths that in some ways duplicate functionality in Mastercam, and in other cases drastically improve upon the existing options.

Once you've selected "Triangular Mesh" for the toolpath type, go to the "Cut Pattern" page, and look at the drop-down menu for "Pattern". This is where you select the toolpath type, and there are a bunch of them!

Toolpaths:

Rough
Parallel Cuts
Project Curves
Constant Z
Constant Cusp
Flatlands
Geodesic
Projection
Rotary

So that is nine different toolpath types that are available to you if you select Triangular Mesh.

Try the "Rouging" option. Activate the checkbox for "Adaptive" roughing, and now the style is similar to "Dynamic". But wait, it gets better. Normally with Dynamic style motion, you are only allowed to cut climb or conventional. Ok, so if you climb cut only, the cutter has to move from the end of the cut, to the start of the next cut, and typically does a micro-lift at a high feedrate to get there.

With the Adaptive rouging from ModuleWorks, you can use "Zig-Zag" stepover. This then allows you to enter 4 parameters: Maximum Stepover, Desired Stepover, Climb stepover percentage, and conventional stepover percentage.

So you can easily take say 75% of the stepover value for climb milling, then take 25% of the stepover value for conventional. This allows the cutter to stay fully engaged during the roughing cut, and allows for even higher metal removal rates than a regular "Dynamic" or "Opti" style roughing path.

New User Frustrations

Hey community..I am a new user to Mastercam. I have been quoting, process designing, programming, setting up, running, inspecting and all around making very intricate parts for 23 years. I previously used Surfcam (14+ years)  and Pro E / Pro manufacture (past 8 years). So that is a little of my history...Since you all know Mastercam is really prevalent in the CNC world, I am hoping to get some help here as the new company I work for will not send me to the VAR for training.

Long story short, coming from Pro E and solids based programing where your toolpath creation options are limitless, I am finding Mastercam to be clunky and not very user friendly. I am able to create toolpaths but not exactly the way I want...So today, let me ask a question as to why it is so difficult to add a proper lead in lead out to a simple contour routine??

I have tried every setting on the lead in lead out page and can NOT get it to generate a simple arc on arc off...Likely it is something glaringly obvious that I am missing but I sure as hell can't find it....

Guess I am just getting out some early am frustration here....Until Cimquest opens up....

Hope everyone out in NC land is having a good day!

Odd feedrates in triangle mesh path

I'm trying to use the triangle mesh toolpaths, but I keep getting weird problems.

This program is using the parallel cut path, but when I code it I get 368 instanse of the feedrate =0.

Can someone code this on a %-axis machine & see if this is a problem with the path or just my post?

Thanks

2017 Expand/Collapse operations

I posted this on the offical Mastercam forum, and got crickets. Figured I would try here.

In previous versions, with the right click menu in the operations manager, when you chose to expand or collapse operations it collapsed (or expanded) every thing in that group (Toolpath group, machine group, operations ext). In 2017, all it does is mimic the behavior when you click the plus or minus sign next to the group.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Active Reports- adding maximum Z depth to tool list

I have modified the Active Reports Tool List (MILL-SIMPLE).rpx file to look like the picture, but in that last column I can't figure out (if possible) how to get it to put out a maximum Z depth for the tools. I tried putting in MAX-Z in the "DataField" and also where it says "Text," but it just stays blank. Basically, what I'm after in that column is if I have 3 operations that use the same tool, is there a way to get it to output the deepest Z point among those 3 operations?

On my set sheet I am trying to post a tool comment I enter in the comment box for my tool when I create geometry. The info is in the xml file but under operations, my set sheet is posting the name of tool instead. Images attached to help explain.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Our company has just gotten a KME tombstone with two  5th axis rotary’s chucks on B0 and B180 ( 4 total). I have used Mastercam in the past but this Shop doesn’t use Mastercam and our current programming system will not support the KME tombstone, this may be my opportunity to get Mastercam in our shop (yea). Has anyone used Mastercam to Program the KME tombstone and how do you use Mastercam , Can you use post a complete program. I use Solidworks to Build complete pallet model and would bring it into Mastercam, will verify show the parts being machined properly. I truly miss using Mastercam

Hi

when working with surface rough pocket , in cut depth  , when using absolute ,the minimum depth is in top .in plane manager i have maked the top of stock as my z zero

so i should have minimum depth zero, maximum depth -20

but the tool path is below the part,. to fix that i have to take minimum depth 20 and max depth zero

mastercam still work with an other plane manager and outputs g code with wrong cordinates

how can i fix that

Screenshots of old Mastercam releases

It just crossed my mind how early Mastercam releases looked like...

Saw a screenshot in one of the posts with a footer note "CNC Software 1983-2016"

Seldom we remember how long these tools have been around...

Does anyone have pics of early Mastercam releases, like V1, V2, V3?

I'm very curious about how the UI looked like back then...
